Egypt Holiday Illness Claim: What Evidence Do You Need?

Date: 3rd March 2020

Holiday illnesses are usually the result of a bacterial infection, caused by poor food hygiene standards and poor swimming pool maintenance. So if you were on an all-inclusive holiday and fell ill, it’s very likely that conditions at the resort caused your condition.

To find out whether you fell ill while on holiday in Egypt, we must establish three key facts.

  • Were you ill before going on holiday?
  • Did you start feeling ill during the holiday or after your return home?
  • Did you swim in the hotel pool or eat the hotel food?

Common Holiday Illnesses

Salmonella

This is one of the most common gastric illnesses among holidaymakers, and can be contracted in several ways. This includes:

  • Eating undercooked or contaminated food
  • Eating unpasteurised eggs and milk
  • Eating food that’s been left out at room temperature for too long
  • Eating food that’s been left out at room temperature for too long
  • Drinking untreated water

A person with Salmonella may show symptoms including:

  • Severe diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloody stools
  • Fever
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Headaches
  • Tiredness

The incubation period for salmonella is usually between 6 and 72 hours, and a person may show symptoms for several days or weeks. In many cases, people recover from Salmonella without needing treatment, but more severe cases can lead to complications including dehydration, irritable bowel syndrome and reactive arthritis.

E.coli

This type of bacteria is common in human and animal intestines, and while some are harmless, others such as E.coli 0157 can cause serious infection and illness.

Common symptoms include:

  • Severe stomach cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bloody stools
  • Nausea
  • Dehydration
  • Tiredness
  • Vomiting
  • No appetite

It’s usually a few days before signs of an E.coli infection start to show, and they can last for about 7 to 10 days.

Campylobacter

This bacterial infection can be found in contaminated food, unchlorinated water and dairy products, as well as animals, insects and other people who are infected.

A holidaymaker can therefore easily contract it by eating undercooked or raw food, eating food that’s been touched by wild birds, or coming into contact with wild animals.

Symptoms of a campylobacter infection may include:

  • Severe diarrhoea
  • Stomach pain
  • Bloody stools
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms often take a couple of days to appear and may last for up to a week.

Shigella

This bacterial infection can often cause dysentery and can be caused by swimming in a contaminated pool, or eating food prepared by infected food handlers.

Common symptoms of shigella include:

  • Bloody stools
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Inflamed intestines
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea

It usually takes between 1 and 3 days for signs of shigella to appear, and symptoms can persist for up to 2 weeks.

Cryptosporidium

This holiday sickness bug can also be spread through contaminated water, such as by swimming in an unclean pool or drinking ice made from untreated water.

Symptoms may include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Loose stools
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite

A person may start showing symptoms 2 to 14 days after being infected, and remain ill for the next 2 to 3 weeks.

As you can see from the list, gastric illnesses have many symptoms in common, so it’s important to get examined by a medical professional right away, and ideally have a stool sample taken. Otherwise, you may not be correctly diagnosed or receive the right treatment for your condition.

And by finding out exactly what condition you’ve got, you might be better placed to identify the likely cause and present evidence to support a claim.

If your hotel has failed to meet basic hygiene standards, you may be able to claim compensation for your illness, ruined holiday and any financial consequences of your condition. Get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to discuss your situation with you and assess your chances of making a successful claim.
