But in our experience, outbreaks of illness at hotels and on cruise liners are usually bacterial in nature, and the result of hygiene controls not being good enough.

In destinations such as the Dominican Republic and Egypt, general sanitation and health standards aren’t anywhere near as high as they are in the UK. However, it’s your tour operator’s duty to keep you safe during your trip.

So they can’t simply wave away a sickness outbreak as something they’re not responsible for, as there may have been plenty of problems that should never have happened or been dealt with straight away.

Common Causes of Holiday Illness

Serious breaches of food hygiene are often responsible for holiday illnesses, as food preparation issues can lead to meals being contaminated with bacteria such as Salmonella, E.coli and Campylobacter.

Failings might include food being reheated, served lukewarm, or buffet food being picked at by birds. If a tour operator doesn’t ensure the food at their resorts or on their cruise ships is fit for human consumption, that’s not acceptable and you could be able to claim compensation if you fall ill after eating it.

Swimming pools are also common sources of illness among holidaymakers. Swimming pools can be contaminated by faecal matter and can become breeding grounds for bacteria if they aren’t properly maintained and chlorinated.
