Guests Complain After Diarrhoea Outbreak at Hotel Riu Touareg, Cape Verde
Date: 1st November 2019
Guests at the Hotel Riu Tourag in Cape Verde, a 5-star TUI resort, have complained after being struck down with diarrhoea and vomiting.
TUI insisted that only a small number of guests were affected by the illness, believed to be gastroenteritis, but one holidaymaker has claimed the figure is actually in the hundreds, the Metro reports.
And online reviews left on TripAdvisor certainly suggest there is a problem with gastric illnesses at the hotel. Indeed, one reviewer said that while her stay was “perfect”, she was lucky to avoid the bug that was affecting other guests.
“We were lucky, I guess, and didn’t suffer, but I spoke to a few that had or are still having an awful time,” the reviewer wrote.
Another TripAdvisor user, meanwhile, stated that after staying at the Hotel Riu Touareg, her “world and intestines came crashing down in a typhoon of sweetcorn and sewage”.
Jody Black, one of those who fell ill, said: “The hotel doctor is fully booked until the day before we are due to fly home. Pool guests are in the toilets spilling their guts and then hopping back in the pool.”
Seema Thomas, who stayed at the same hotel earlier this month, didn’t fall ill herself, but noted that lots of other guests were falling ill a few days before she left, with many queuing up outside the doctor’s room at the resort.
She stated that parts of the pool were closed during her stay and that staff were spraying hand sanitiser on everyone who entered the restaurants. Furthermore, she revealed that concerns over the health of holidaymakers led to Ms Thomas’s flight being delayed on the runway after her plane touched down at Manchester Airport.
Speaking to the Metro, she said: “We had to wait for a medical team to check before they gave the okay to leave the plane. The passengers who declared themselves ill were asked to remain behind on the plane to be assessed further.”
A TUI spokesperson insisted that customer safety is its “number one priority” and that situations like this are “extremely rare”.
“We would like to reassure customers that we closely audit all the hotels we work with to ensure they meet our high health and safety standards,” the spokesperson said.
TUI stated that it is working closely with the Riu Touareg and put increased hygiene protocols in place on top of the “already stringent measures”. The spokesperson added that it would be happy to speak to any customers who are due to stay at the hotel if they have any questions or concerns.
If you or a member of your family suffered sickness on holiday and believe the illness was caused by the fault or negligence of the hotel or tour operator, you may be entitled to compensation.
