Illness reported by guests at the Sirenis Punta Cana Resort Casino & Aquagames
We have been instructed by holidaymakers who have reported to us that they experienced concerning hygiene standards while staying at the Sirenis Punta Cana Resort Casino & Aquagames in the Dominican Republic, where other guests have also reported problems, with some saying that they became unwell.
The Sirenis Punta Cana Resort Casino & Aquagames in the Dominican Republic
The Sirenis Punta Cana Resort Casino & Aquagames is situated in the Uvero Alto region of the Dominican Republic, an increasingly popular holiday destination that TUI-owned UK tour operator TUI advertise package holidays to on an all-inclusive basis.
The resort itself is set in a sprawling beachside location and features a water park and a number of restaurants and bars, but from recent reviews, it appears that there may be hygiene problems at the Dom’ Rep’ hotel.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that we have reported on possible health concerns at the Sirenis Punta Cana, and as recently as January we commented on reports being made by sick holidaymakers.
Reports of possible hygiene issues and food poisoning
The unfortunate holidaymakers who contacted us informed us that they witnessed a number of concerning hygiene issues, including sightings of frogs in the hotel foyer and birds in the dining areas. They also informed us that they encountered further problems in the hotel restaurants, where they say that they were served burgers and hot dogs that were undercooked, and they believe that food was being recycled.
On TripAdvisor the Sirenis Punta Cana has many positive reviews; however, it has recently received some less favourable reviews that have also highlighted potential problems with hygiene at the Dom’ Rep’ hotel.
‘DOYLE K’ stayed at the Sirenis Punta Cana this April, and in their review titled “What a horrible resort!” they say that the “food was awful” and the rooms were “dirty, mouldy, outdated and [smelled] musty”.
In their review titled “Great family trip for a wedding but was not without issues“, ‘RealEstategirl7’ says that during their stay at the Sirenis Punta Cana in April the “rooms desperately need to be renovated” and “many of [their] party experienced mould in their rooms“. She continues to say that her brother “was very sick from the mould“, suffering for “5 out of [the] 7 days” that they were there for.
London holidaymaker ‘maisiex24x’ wrote a review of their stay at the Sirenis Punta Cana in April titled “No A la Carte meals“, in which she says that they suffered from “a very bad bug/food poisoning“, explaining that “on the 2nd night [they] all became very ill” and her “son was sick 11 times“.
She says that they “had only eaten in the buffet and presumed [that their condition was caused by] this“, continuing to comment that they “were all ill for 3 more days” which “did somewhat spoil [their] holiday“.
Animals could contaminate your food
Although you can expect to encounter exotic animals while on holiday in a warmer climate, you don’t want to find them in certain areas of your resort, and especially not in the hotel dining areas. Birds, in particular, can cause hygiene issues, as many species are known to carry contagious diseases, some of which can be spread by pecking at buffet food, or by simply flying or landing near to it.
Mould can spread disease
Mould can cause a number of health issues if it isn’t dealt with swiftly, most commonly respiratory complications, but it could also be an indication that there are further problems with the hygiene at your hotel. Mould needs to be left alone so that it can grow and spread its spores, meaning that if mould is thriving in your hotel room, it’s possible that other holiday ruining pathogens are too.
Food poisoning could be prevented
Food poisoning is one of the most common forms of holiday illness that is reported to us, and usually, it could be prevented by more effective hygiene and food safety processes, such as HACCP, in the hotel kitchen, especially in instances wherein high-risk produce is served at an unsafe temperature and food is being recycled.
