British Tourists Suffer Illness at the ClubHotel Riu Bachata
The ClubHotel Riu Bachata is advertised as a 5 star resort which some considered being better than the various Riu hotels in the Dominican Republic, and although this Puerto Plata hotel receives a number of positive reviews, some are far less complimentary, and suggest that standards may be slipping.
About the Riu Bachata
The Riu Bachata is offered as an all-inclusive resort by UK tour operators TUI and First Choice, who boasts the resorts enticing features, including sea views, availability of a selection of water sports, and a range of speciality restaurants to choose from. TUI also advertises that the Riu Bachata is “perfect for your wedding day” and at the time of writing provides couples on their honeymoon with a “complimentary bottle of rum and fruit on arrival”. While the Riu Bachata may seem very appealing, some reviews draw attention to issues at the Dom Rep hotel.
TripAdvisor reports of Rats, Flies and Illness at the Riu Bachata
Reviews for the Riu Bachata are generally quite positive, but some do point towards issues with the quality of the resort, particularly the low standard of hygiene in the swimming pool and at restaurants and buffets:
TripAdvisor ‘davildo’ posted a user review with the following comments: “Had a very bad stomach since my arrival and have complained to rep.” adding that “I am not the only one, having spoken to quite a few others they all have had the same and one person had it the whole 2 weeks.”
Issues of poor hygiene were raised by ‘1978louise’ who said that “on two occasions we witnessed a rat climb out of the swimming pool” and that dead flies could be found on food in the restaurants. These issues with food and pool hygiene could be the cause of the holiday illness that affected her family: “The second week my daughter became ill I also became ill and so did my other son [sic] I was at the doctors having anti spasmodic injections and antibiotics just what you don’t expect on holiday and we all had stomach cramps throughout the holiday.”
Problems with disease were not just limited to this TripAdvisor user, who noted that many other British families were affected. Unfortunately illness can strike at any resort, whether advertised as a 5 star resort or lower.
