“Nightmare” sickness bug at Pamucak’s Aquafantasy Aquapark
Guests staying at the 5-star Aquafantasy Aquapark Hotel & Spa in Turkey’s popular resort Pamucak have reported falling ill with a sickness bug.
On Tripadvisor a family calls the sickness bug at the Aquafantasy Aquapark a “nightmare” describing how the hotel’s swimming pool appeared to have no chlorine in it and food on the buffet was left uncovered or even reheated and reserved. Cups in the dining room were also washed in plain water without any washing up liquid.
The reviewer added that the bath in their hotel room had mould in it. All of these issues were reported to the holiday reps, but they said there was little concern for the complaints.
Poor hygiene and lapses in food preparation are the main causes of gastroenteritis at holiday hotels. If the swimming pool isn’t cleaned properly, holidaymakers are at risk of catching Cryptosporidium, a common cause of holiday illness.
The bug is passed on through human or animal faeces, and there is a risk of contamination if the pool is soiled. Common symptoms of Cryptosporidium include:
- Stomach cramps
- A general feeling of tiredness and weakness
The management at the Aquafantasy Aquapark have responded online to the Tripadvisor review:
“The hotel follows ISO standards and the food, pool water and cleaning levels are monitored daily by the hotel and external agents and only the highest levels are acceptable to us.”
Another guest of the Aquafantasy Aquapark posting on Tripadvisor also mentions poor quality food, which is reheated and left on the buffet:
“Food is certainly not wasted in the all inclusive restaurant as they reserve over and over again any left overs. The choice is also very limited and not cooked very well. Everything is very greasy.”
There are other reviews commenting on the food, so guests staying at the resort should be wary of eating food on the buffet left uncovered, or which may have been reheated or not cooked thoroughly or chilled properly.
Any contamination of the swimming pool, or a lack of chlorine disinfectant should also be reported to a holiday rep or hotel management.
