Salmonella Illness at Dreams La Romana in Dominican Republic
Guests are returning from the hotel Dreams La Romana in the Dominican Republic with Salmonella holiday food poisoning.
The Dreams La Romana has a history of guests being diagnosed with salmonella – in 2009 a TripAdvisor user posted a review saying her teenage son had been ill with salmonella for a week while staying at the Dreams La Romana, and pointed to issues with cleanliness, including “large drunken crowds” and vomit in the public bathrooms at the hotel.
Problems with overcrowding and the management of the Dreams La Romana were echoed in other reviews, including recent reviews on TripAdvisor.
One holidaymaker who stayed in July 2011 but posted a review on 31 October this year mentioned that the food made guests sick and maintenance at the hotel was poor, with dirty bathrooms.
Many reviews are favourable and the manager does respond to criticisms, but the buffet style catering may hold a clue to guests becoming ill with salmonella, as in warm climates food left out can lead to bacterial infections, which spread rapidly if public area in a hotel are not kept scrupulously clean.
Salmonella can also be carried by birds and insects accessing food on buffets – and the symptoms can include fever, headache and violent episodes of sickness and diarrhoea.
