The All-Inclusive Holidays that Include more than a Bargain
The Secret Tourist Highlights the Dangers that Lurk in Hotels Abroad
All inclusive holidays to popular destinations like Egypt, Turkey, the Canaries and the Dominican Republic have never been in such demand. And often holidaymakers get a lot more than they bargained for – because these ‘bargain’ holidays can have all the ingredients which lead to holiday illness and accidents abroad.
Looking around the resort, there were many slips, trips and falls waiting to happen due to shoddy maintenance like broken manhole covers. Even more worrying was the children’s play area which could have caused a serious holiday accident with its dangerous, rusting equipment and trip hazards on the floor. The programme found loose electric cables and the presence of cockroaches showed the poor cleanliness and hygiene standards of the hotel.
Unlike in some resorts where there is not enough chlorine in the swimming pool, risking serious holiday illness from bacteria, this pool had too much chlorine – over double the correct level. As shown on the programme, this can lead to chemical burns and painful skin rashes. The pool was even topped up with chlorine whilst people were still using it – this should only happen when the pool is closed.
Another water-based hazard was the hotel’s Jacuzzi, which definitely didn’t have any chlorine in it at all. It was clearly slimy and hadn’t been emptied and cleaned for some time and the bacteria found in the pool, pseudomas, can cause skin and ear infections. In fact, the Jacuzzi contained the bacteria which causes Legionnaires disease – a severe holiday illness which can prove fatal: the programme’s expert recommended that the Jacuzzi be closed immediately.
A quick test of the ice and drinking water from the all-inclusive bar found that the ice contained 200 coliforms per millilitre – that figure should be zero – plus it contained faecal matter. The drinking water contained 200 times the acceptable level of bacteria.
