Salmonella Food Poisoning
Was your Child Ill on Holiday?
Salmonella Food Poisoning on Holiday
If your child or infant suffers salmonella food poisoning on holiday you may be able to claim compensation from your holiday tour operator.
Salmonella food poisoning and gastroenteritis are among the most common holiday related problems affecting children. Children and infants are at high risk for diarrhoea and other food borne illnesses due to limited pre-existing immunity and behavioural factors such as frequent hand to mouth contact.
Infants and children with holiday sickness and diarrhoea can become dehydrated in hot holiday destinations such as Egypt – Turkey – Tunisia and Morocco very quickly.
Parents travelling on holiday abroad with young children should monitor them closely for symptoms of salmonella food poisoning.
Symptoms of Salmonella Food Poisoning Include:
- Profuse and occasionally bloody diarrhoea
- Dehydration
- Headaches
- Fever
- Nausea and vomiting
Salmonella food poisoning is a common cause of holiday sickness and hotel illness abroad – the most common cause of this debilitating illness is the consumption of contaminated food containing salmonella bacteria. This holiday bug is often prevalent in eggs, chicken and beef especially if it is not cooked or stored properly.
Prevention of Salmonella Food Poisoning on Holiday
Be particularly careful when selecting food from the hotel buffet – ensure meat, especially chicken and beef is hot and cooked thoroughly. Do not consume hotel food or use cutlery that may have been contaminated by wild birds as they have often feed at local landfills and sewage farms!
Hands should always be washed before eating particular after visiting the toilet because salmonella food poisoning can be spread from person to person via the oral faecal route.
For babies, breastfeeding is the best way to prevent food borne illness. Parents should be particularly careful to wash hands well after changing nappies in infants with diarrhoea to avoid spreading salmonella infection to themselves and other family members.
What Should I do if my Child Shows Signs of Salmonella Infection on Holiday?
If your child has symptoms of salmonella food poisoning you should report it to your Holiday Representative and insist on seeing an independent doctor. Do not accept that your child has picked up some mysterious air-borne virus – seek treatment which may prevent long term health problems and which may salvage the remainder of your holiday.
The Risks Associated with Salmonella Food Poisoning on Holiday
The greatest risk to an infant experiencing diarrhoea and vomiting on holiday is dehydration. Fever or increased ambient temperature often increases fluid losses and accelerates dehydration.
If your child’s symptoms continue upon returning to the UK take them to the doctors and provide a stool sample.
