First Choice Pay £17,500 Compensation for Holiday Village Salmonella Bug

Salmonella are bacteria which often contaminates food causing profuse and watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, blood in stools and occasional vomiting. The bug is killed by cooking food properly and is prevented from multiplying through hygienic food practices.

“When First Choice finally responded to the claim they robustly denied liability on the basis that it was for ‘the Claimant to prove that the Hotel and/or its staff failed to exercise reasonable skill and care, and that the standard of care owned falls to be assessed by reference to local standards, not British safety standards.’
They continued to say that, ‘the hotel had a reasonable system of monitoring the health and hygiene of food and preparation areas on a daily basis‘ and that the ‘hotel employs an independent Food Engineer Nilgun Kazandere who monitors not only the food and preparation areas but also the staff areas.‘”

“Despite the protestations of the lawyer representing First Choice, Simpson Millar, obtained a medical report from a gastroenterologist which suggested that their gastrointestinal illnesses, including the confirmed salmonella was acquired at the Holiday Village.”
