Illness at Steigenberger Aqua Magic in Hurghada, Egypt
We have been instructed to represent a family who contracted a holiday illness whilst staying at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic in Hurghada, Egypt during May 2015. They reported symptoms of diarrhoea, severe cramps, nausea and headaches.
Illness at Thomas Cook Advertised 5 Star Property
The hotel which is reasonably new opened its doors back in January 2014 and is offered as a holiday destination to families throughout Britain, by UK tour operator; Thomas Cook. They advertise the hotel as a 5* all-inclusive aquamania property that includes multiple restaurants and an onsite water park, making the hotel an appealing option for many families, including our clients.
Unfortunately despite the promise of a trip that they would remember our clients did not have the ‘magical’ holiday that they expected.
Poor Hygiene Leads to Holiday Illness
They reported a long list of concerns over food hygiene that resulted in them becoming ill at the hotel including issues with the way that food was prepared and stored including food being left out uncovered for long periods of time, food that should have been hot food being served cold and ice cream not being fully frozen. Any hotel that practices good hygiene should be aware that this is just bad practice.
Issues with food were not our clients only cause for concern as they found that both flies and birds were frequently found to be present in the restaurants of the hotel. In addition to this they found that their cutlery and glasses were dirty, with utensils being stored inadequately and being shared between dishes.
Holiday Ruined by Illness
Part of this could be attributed to poor management at the hotel as our clients found that there were insufficient staff members in the buffet restaurant, but it’s clear that regardless of the failure in addressing these issues, our clients experienced unacceptable levels of hygiene during what should have been an enjoyable and well-earned break. Along with numerous holidaymakers who were made unwell at the hotel, their trip was ruined by this oversight.
Lack of Hotel Assistance
Whilst these hygiene failures are a serious concern, so was the ‘care’ given whilst at the hotel once these issues were raised and illnesses reported. Our clients were advised by members of staff at the hotel that this was a ‘regular complaint’ at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic and offered no assistance.
Thomas Cook has admitted liability in this case and once medical evidence has been finalised, compensation will be paid to our clients who were unfortunate enough to have become ill at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic.
Doing Your Part to Stop Holiday Illness
It’s important to do what you can to make sure that tour operators such as Thomas Cook and hotels that practice poor hygiene are made aware that holidaymakers won’t stand for these conditions. The hotel has been experiencing problems and these problems may have been the cause of many reported holiday illnesses, but until they are made aware that this practice isn’t acceptable to holidaymakers they will likely continue to operate the way that they are.
