Every year Simpson Millar Solicitors’ Holiday Illness Claims team are inundated by calls from angry and upset tourists who have had their dream holidays to Egypt ruined by food poisoning illness.
Don’t be Fobbed Off!
Don’t let your tour operator tell you it was a change in the climate that made you sick or some other lame excuse like “it’s a virus”!
A report from the Egyptian Health Ministry Head of Preventative Medicine Department, Aaty Abdel Aleem, blames contaminated food for outbreaks of typhoid in Egypt with around 400 new cases reported each month.
The Ministry Head blamed food poisoning during the hot summer months when bacteria spread much more quickly.
The Cairo Two-Step
Also referred to colloquially as the “Cairo Two-Step” but more commonly referred to as travelers’ diarrhoea, bacterial infections such as Salmonella and Campylobacter multiply and are caused by contaminated food.
The main symptoms present as bouts of violent diarrhoea sometimes containing blood and excruciating stomach pains.
Food Poisoning Claims Set to Increase
As the summer 2013 holiday season draws ever closer and the climate in Egypt becomes hotter the risk of food poisoning increases as hotels are put under pressure to service millions of tourists who flock to resorts such as the Red Sea and Sharm El Sheikh each year.
More people are set to take all-inclusive holidays this year and if a batch of food is contaminated then often this results in an entire hotel being struck down by a sickness bug.
Don’t be a Victim of Egyptian Belly – Some Tips!
Take care to guard against poor hygiene practices by being observant.
- Check food is cooked thoroughly and definitely avoid chicken that is pink or bloody and shellfish which may have been cultivated in waters where raw sewage is pumped and cause illness and sickness such as salmonella, ciguatera and dysentery;
- Food made from beef like hamburgers are also capable of spreading infections including E-Coli if the meat is not cooked through;
- If birds are allowed to fly freely around dining areas this could be a warning that table surfaces and food counters might be contaminated by disease and in particular the nasty bug campylobacter;
- Be wary of swimming pools that appear cloudy or have a ring of grime around their edge as they may be harbors for parasites and protozoa such as cryptosporidium and giardia.
